Antidepressant Remeron

It is also known as mirtazapine and is an anti-depressant. Researchers are still trying to understand how this medicine works. However, it is thought to affect the nerve cells and helps improve their communication with central nervous system. It is an atypical antidepressant and contains specific serotonergic activity. It was first introduced in the year 1996.

Uses of Remeron

This medicine is used primarily in the treatment of depression. It can also be used as an antiemetic, anxiolytic, hypnotic, and appetite stimulant.

Side Effects of Remeron

Side effects of using this medicine can be similar to any other anti-depressants. Some people can have no or minor side effects after using this medicine, but in some cases it can become serious. If you get any side effects after using the medicine, contact the doctor immediately. Share with them any new changes you might feel. Also, get immediate medical help for allergic reactions, swelling of face, tongue or throat or skin rashes.

Contraindications of Remeron

Using medicines such as Remeron comes with certain risks. Most patients should talk to their doctors about their medical history and complications if any. If you are using any prescription, non-prescription or herbal medicines or if you have a history of seizure, glaucoma, bipolar disorder, dizzy spells, low blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, chest pain, stroke or a history of drug abuse. There are certain medicines which do not go very well with remeron. Other drugs which have a sleepy effect can make this worse. Inform your doctor is you are using any pain medicine, or sleeping pills or medicines for anxiety or depression. This will help the doctor understand and advise accordingly. Certain other medicines, such as tramadol or tryptophan, medicines for mental illness, or phenytoin can have side effects. It is always best to let the doctor know and start or stop the medicines accordingly. Wait for couple of weeks before using any new medicine. If you feel or have suicidal tendencies or if you want to hurt yourself, then contact the medical facility for help. Family members should also be alert for any such mood swings or actions. This medicine is not approved for children or anyone below the age of 18. Talk to your doctor and only then start or stop this medicine. Alcoholic beverages can be harmful, hence should be avoided at all costs. Some symptoms make take couple of weeks to improve.

Pregnancy and Remeron

It has not been established yet if the medicine harms the unborn child. Also, it is not known yet if nursing a child while using this medicine can have any harmful effects. It is advisable to consult a doctor before using the medicine during pregnancy.
